How to use Garmin data with Claude and ChatGPT

Garmin builds no connection to ChatGPT or Claude, but that no longer means Garmin data cannot reach them. ChatGPT can read Garmin figures that Garmin writes into Apple Health, on an iPhone with a United States account. Claude reaches Garmin activities only after they sync to Strava, which needs a Strava subscription.

Athmex works separately from either route. It gives Claude or ChatGPT your PBs, thresholds, goals, races, injuries and equipment without importing your Garmin activities.

No direct Garmin connection was found

Garmin’s current consumer support, developer documentation and Connect IQ catalogue do not list a Garmin-built connection for ChatGPT or Claude.

Garmin does have APIs for approved businesses. The Garmin Connect Developer Program requires an application. Its Activity API can give approved platforms access to detailed activity files after the athlete consents.

That does not give an individual Garmin owner a connection they can add to ChatGPT or Claude. Garmin data can still reach ChatGPT, but by a different mechanism described below, and it reaches Claude through Strava. Other services advertise Garmin connections, but they are not built by Garmin. Athmex does not recommend them because their authorisation, data handling and reliability have not been verified.

How to connect Garmin activities to Claude

For Claude users, the route combines Garmin’s supported Strava sync with Strava’s official Claude connection:

  1. Garmin Connect sends activities to Strava.
  2. Strava gives Claude read-only access to the athlete’s Strava data.
  3. Claude can answer questions using the activities that reached Strava.

You need a Strava subscription. Claude’s web connectors are available to all Claude users.

Step 1: connect Garmin Connect to Strava

In the Strava app:

  1. Open You → Settings.
  2. Select Connect an app or device.
  3. Select Garmin, then Connect Garmin.
  4. Sign in to Garmin Connect and approve the requested permissions.

Garmin says the previous year of activities will sync to Strava when you connect the accounts. Future activities will sync as you upload them to Garmin Connect.

Garmin’s connection instructions and Strava’s Garmin guide both describe this setup.

Step 2: connect Strava to Claude

In Claude:

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Browse the connector directory.
  3. Select Strava.
  4. Connect and authorise your Strava account.

Strava launched its Claude connector on 1 June 2026. It is read-only and available only to Strava subscribers. Strava says support for other assistants may come later.

Strava’s setup guide covers the current setup and limits.

What Claude receives through Strava

Garmin sends completed activities to Strava. Claude can then read the activity history and fitness trends stored in Strava, including pace, heart rate, GPS and cycling power when those fields are available.

It does not include everything in Garmin Connect. Garmin and Strava describe the connection as an activity sync, and their documentation does not list Body Battery, sleep, HRV status, stress or training readiness as transferred fields.

Claude can analyse the runs and rides in Strava. It cannot see the Garmin account as a whole.

How Garmin data reaches ChatGPT

Strava is not the answer here. Strava documents setup for Claude and not for ChatGPT, so Garmin to Strava to ChatGPT is not a route. What works instead is Apple Health: Garmin Connect can write into Apple Health, and ChatGPT's Health feature reads Apple Health, so the data arrives without Garmin or Strava building anything for ChatGPT.

Other services may offer their own bridges, but they are not built by Garmin. Athmex does not recommend services whose Garmin access, data handling and reliability we cannot verify.

To set it up, open More in the Garmin Connect app, then Settings, then Connected Apps, then Apple Health, and select Connect with Apple Health. Then open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar, choose Connect Health and pick Apple Health.

The limits matter. OpenAI documents Health as available to logged-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts in the United States, aged 18 or over, and connecting Apple Health requires an iPhone. What arrives is whatever Garmin writes into Apple Health rather than everything in Garmin Connect, and OpenAI notes that some proprietary scores may not transfer. Body Battery and Training Readiness are Garmin calculations, so do not assume they appear.

Either way, ChatGPT can use the athlete context stored in Athmex. Read how to use ChatGPT as a training coach for the setup. That gives ChatGPT your goals, races, thresholds and injuries, which no activity route carries.

What activity data does not tell your assistant

Garmin and Strava tell the assistant what training you did, and Strava passes on the zones and best efforts it derived from it. They do not tell it what race you are preparing for, what time you are chasing, whether an injury changes the plan, or which of those figures you have actually confirmed.

Athmex stores those facts as dated records:

  • Personal bests and their dates
  • Thresholds and the values they replaced
  • Goals and target times
  • Upcoming races
  • Injuries and constraints
  • Equipment

Athmex never imports your activities. Claude or ChatGPT does the analysis. See how Athmex works for details.

Comparison of the activity data available through Garmin and Strava with the personal bests, thresholds, goals, races, injuries and equipment stored by Athmex.
Strava provides completed activities. Athmex provides the PBs, thresholds, goals, races, injuries and equipment used to interpret them.

A useful prompt might be:

Compare my recent long runs with my 1:32 half-marathon PB, my sub-3:10 marathon goal on 18 October, and the calf issue I logged last week.

With Claude, Strava supplies the recent runs and the figures it derived from them, while Athmex supplies the race goal, the race date, the injury history and the values the athlete confirmed. With ChatGPT, Athmex can supply the same context, but no official route to Garmin activities was found.

Common questions about Garmin and ChatGPT

Does Garmin have an official ChatGPT or Claude connection?

No Garmin-built consumer connection was found. We checked Garmin's consumer support, developer documentation and Connect IQ catalogue. Garmin's APIs are for approved businesses, not a connection an individual can add. Where Garmin data does reach ChatGPT, it travels through Apple Health rather than through anything Garmin built for an assistant.

Can Claude read my Garmin activities?

Yes, through Strava. Sync Garmin Connect with Strava, then connect Strava to Claude. You need a Strava subscription. Claude sees what is stored in Strava, not your full Garmin account.

Does Garmin history backfill to Strava?

Yes. Garmin says the previous year of activities will sync when you connect the accounts, followed by future activities. You can export older activities from Garmin Connect and upload them to Strava manually.

Will Body Battery, sleep and HRV reach Claude through Strava?

Garmin and Strava document this as an activity sync. Their current documentation does not list Garmin Body Battery, sleep, HRV status, stress or Training Readiness as fields transferred to Strava.

Does the Strava connection work with ChatGPT?

No. Strava documents setup for Claude and says it may support other assistants later. Garmin data reaches ChatGPT through Apple Health instead, which is a separate mechanism with its own limits.

Does Athmex import Garmin or Strava activities?

No. Athmex stores the context you enter, such as PBs, thresholds, goals, races, injuries and equipment. Your activity source connects to the assistant separately.

However you get your Garmin data into Claude or ChatGPT, an Athmex profile is worth having alongside it. It covers your goals, races and injuries, and it is where you would add Strava if you decide to go that route.
