How to connect Apple Watch to Claude and ChatGPT

Apple Watch reaches the two assistants by different paths. ChatGPT can read Apple Health directly through its Health feature, on an iPhone with a United States account. Claude cannot, and still needs the activity to travel through Strava.

Which app you record with decides whether the Strava half works at all, and that choice is made before any connector exists.

Apple Health is how an Apple Watch reaches ChatGPT

The watch itself is not the thing an assistant connects to. Everything it records goes into Apple Health on your iPhone, and that store is where both routes begin.

ChatGPT can now read Apple Health directly. OpenAI's Health feature connects to Apple Health on iOS, so an Apple Watch wearer can get sleep, resting heart rate, workouts and activity into ChatGPT without any device connector existing. It is available to logged-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts in the United States, aged 18 or over, and connecting Apple Health needs an iPhone.

Claude has no equivalent. HealthKit is a framework for apps running on Apple's own platforms and has no web endpoint, so a remote connector has nothing to sign in to. ChatGPT reaches it because its iOS app reads the store on the device, not because Apple opened a cloud API. For Claude the route still runs through Strava, which is what most of this page covers.

The choice that matters most: which app you record with

Most of the difficulty people hit with this setup is decided before any connector exists, at the moment they press start on the watch.

Recording with the Strava app on the watch

The activity is created in Strava from the beginning. Nothing depends on Apple Health, no 30-day window applies, and there is no sync step to troubleshoot. If you already know you want your sessions in Strava, this is the route with the fewest ways to go wrong.

Recording with Apple’s Workout app

This works too, but on Strava’s terms. Only activities recorded with the native Workout app in the past 30 days can sync, and activities written to Apple Health by a third-party app never sync at all. If you record with a different training app that writes into Health, those sessions will not reach Strava by this route.

To turn the sync on, open Strava, tap the settings icon on the You tab, then Manage Apps and Devices, then Health, then the plus icon, and connect. On the Health Access screen, enable Workouts & Routes. Back in Manage Apps and Devices → Health, toggle Automatic Uploads on. Individual activities can also be pulled across with Import.

If an activity refuses to appear, the usual causes are that it was not recorded by the native Workout app, that Strava already holds an activity at the same date and time and is refusing the duplicate, or that a Health permission was never granted.

Connecting Strava to Claude

Once activities are in Strava, the assistant side is the same connection covered on the Strava page: in Claude, open Customize → Connectors, add a connector, search for Strava and authorise it. It is read-only, available to Strava subscribers, and has been rolling out since 1 June 2026.

This route ends at Claude. Strava says it launched with Anthropic and is looking at other clients later, so Strava does not carry your activities to ChatGPT. ChatGPT gets Apple Watch data from Apple Health instead, which is a different path with different limits.

What each route leaves behind

The two routes drop different things. Strava receives an activity and nothing else, so sleep, resting heart rate, heart-rate variability and the activity rings never reach Claude. ChatGPT Health sees far more of Apple Health, but only what each app actually writes there. OpenAI says what arrives varies by app and by metric, and that some proprietary scores may not transfer.

Sending data the other way is a smaller help than it looks. Strava can push route, activity type, distance, time and calories back into Apple Health, and route information from third-party activities does not make that trip.

None of this is something Athmex retrieves for you. Athmex holds a different layer, and it is the one no device recorded in the first place.

The training facts no watch ever recorded

An Apple Watch records what happened. It has no field for what you are training for.

Your goal race and its date, the time you are chasing, the threshold pace you actually train to, the PB you would recognise as yours, the hamstring that objects when weekly volume climbs, the four mornings a week you genuinely have: none of that is in Apple Health, none of it is in Strava, and no amount of connector work will produce it. It is the part you have to supply.

Athmex is where you supply it. You enter those facts once, each stored with the date it became true, and connect Athmex to Claude or ChatGPT directly. Athmex stores no activity history and does not import from Apple Health or Strava. The assistant does the reasoning, using your confirmed numbers alongside whatever activity connector you run.

It is also the part that does not depend on where you live or which phone you carry, since the Apple Health route is currently limited to United States accounts on an iPhone.

Common questions about Apple Watch and AI assistants

Can Claude or ChatGPT read Apple Health directly?

ChatGPT can, through its Health feature, on an iPhone with a United States account. Claude cannot. HealthKit has no web endpoint, so a remote connector has nothing to sign in to, and ChatGPT reaches it only because its iOS app reads the store on the device. For Claude, Apple Watch data still has to go through Strava first.

Do I have to use the Strava app on my watch?

No, but it is the simpler route. Recording in Strava puts the activity where it needs to be immediately. Apple’s Workout app also works, provided the activity was recorded by that app and is less than 30 days old.

Why is my Apple Watch workout missing from Strava?

Usually one of three reasons: the workout was recorded by a third-party app rather than Apple’s Workout app, it is older than 30 days, or Strava already has an activity at that date and time and is rejecting it as a duplicate. Missing Health permissions are the other common cause.

Does my sleep or resting heart rate reach an assistant?

Not through Strava, which carries activities only, so Claude does not see them. ChatGPT Health can, because it reads Apple Health directly, provided the route is open to you and the app has written those values into Health.

Does Athmex import Apple Health or Strava data?

No. Athmex stores no activity history at all. It holds the athlete context you enter yourself, including thresholds, PBs, goals, races, injuries and equipment, and supplies that to Claude or ChatGPT.

However you get your Apple Watch data into Claude or ChatGPT, an Athmex profile is worth having alongside it. It covers your goals, races and injuries, and it is where you would add Strava if you decide to go that route.
