You. Your fitness. Your activity data. Together in Claude and ChatGPT.
Can ChatGPT or Claude help you train for the Maratona dles Dolomites?
Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can help you choose between the 55, 106 and 138 km routes, plan a build for repeated long climbs and turn the cut-offs at Corvara and Cernadoi into a pace you can hold. It needs your FTP and when you tested it, your weight and the hours you can train.
Athmex keeps those in one athlete profile that ChatGPT or Claude can use in every conversation. The assistant gives the advice; Athmex keeps the context current.

Your recent rides belong in the conversation too
A Maratona build runs from winter to midsummer, and repeated climbing is hard to fake. The useful questions come from the gap between the plan and the riding you actually did.
When your rides reach ChatGPT or Claude through your training platform’s own connection, your coach can see how the long days and the climbing are building, and what your power looked like on them. Routes differ by platform and by assistant.
Athmex doesn’t import activity. It keeps the context those rides are read against: your event, route, FTP, weight, weekly hours and constraints. Build your free athlete profile and Athmex will show you the best available way to bring your rides into ChatGPT or Claude for your setup.

Three routes that climb at the same rate
The three routes share the opening loop round the Sella group, the Sellaronda, over Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena. The 55 km ends there. The 106 and 138 km go back over Campolongo and on into the Ampezzo side.
| Route | Climbing | Climbing per km | Passes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 km, Sellaronda | 1,780 m | About 32 m | Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, Gardena |
| 106 km | 3,130 m | About 30 m | The Sellaronda, then Campolongo again and Valparola from Andraz, with the Mür dl Giat near the end |
| 138 km, Maratona | 4,230 m | About 31 m | The Sellaronda, Campolongo again, Giau, then Falzarego and Valparola from Pocol, and the Mür dl Giat |
Per kilometre, all three are about equally steep. The difference is how long you keep climbing: about 1,800 m on the short route and more than twice that on the long one. So choose by the hours you can sustain climbing, not by how hard the gradients look.
The passes, and where the long route gets hard
Four passes on the 138 km reach 2,200 m or more. The organiser’s figures show where the effort sits: the Sellaronda climbs are moderate, and the Giau, 9.9 km at an average of 9.3% with ramps to 15%, is the hardest climb of the day.
| Pass | Summit | Length | Average | Steepest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passo Campolongo | 1,875 m | 5.8 km | 6.1% | 11% |
| Passo Pordoi | 2,239 m | 9.2 km | 6.9% | 10% |
| Passo Sella | 2,244 m | 5.5 km | 7.9% | 12% |
| Passo Gardena | 2,121 m | 5.8 km | 4.3% | 10% |
| Passo Giau | 2,236 m | 9.9 km | 9.3% | 15% |
| Passo Valparola, from Pocol | 2,200 m | 11.5 km | 5.8% | 15% |
| Mür dl Giat | 1,472 m | 370 m | 12.4% | 19% |
The Mür dl Giat is short, but at up to 19% near the finish it needs a gear low enough to keep turning the pedals on tired legs. On the 106 km, Valparola comes from Andraz instead: 11.8 km at 6.7%.

Cut-offs: the route you finish is decided by the clock
You can change route during the ride, but two control points decide it for you if you’re late. They apply to everyone, whatever time your start group left.
| Point | Time | What happens after it |
|---|---|---|
| Corvara, towards Campolongo (55 km) | 11.30am | Riders must go to the finish: the Sellaronda becomes your route. |
| Cernadoi, towards Passo Giau (76 km) | 11.50am | Riders must take the middle course towards Falzarego. |
| Finish, 55 km | 1pm | The finish closes for the short route. |
| Finish, 106 and 138 km | 4.45pm | The finish closes for both longer routes. |
Refreshments and mechanical and medical help also close in turn: at Passo Sella at 11.15am, Campolongo at noon, Gardena at 12.15pm, Colle Santa Lucia at 12.25pm, Passo Giau at 2.15pm and Passo Falzarego at 4pm.
For the 138 km, the Cernadoi cut-off is the one to plan around. Give ChatGPT or Claude your FTP and weight and ask it to estimate your time to 76 km, over five climbs and about 2,000 m, then check it leaves a margin.
Start groups, and why your past results matter
Riders assemble in La Villa from 5.30am, and the grids close at 6.15am. The first group starts at 6.30am and the others follow a minute apart. Groups are set by your finishing times in the 2023 to 2026 editions. For the 138 km, men under 5 hours 20 minutes and women under 7 hours start in group A, men under 6 hours in group B and men under 8 hours in group C.
Starting before your group means disqualification. If this is your first Maratona, expect to start in a later group and to spend the first climbs in heavy traffic, which matters for the Corvara and Cernadoi cut-offs.
Training for repeated mountain efforts
The Maratona asks you to climb hard, recover on a descent and climb again, up to seven times. Training should copy that: repeated sustained efforts with short recoveries, not one long climb.
| Month | What the training is for |
|---|---|
| February and March | Aerobic volume and consistency. Indoor sustained efforts of 15 to 30 minutes. |
| April | Repeated climbing efforts, three or four in a ride, with steady recoveries between. |
| May | Long rides with five or more climbs or efforts. Retest FTP and upload your medical certificate. |
| June | Your biggest weeks, ideally with some real mountains, and fuelling practice at pace. |
| Race week | A short taper, travel to Alta Badia and bib collection in person. |
Pace each pass from a current FTP, holding the Sellaronda well below threshold so the Giau still gets your best effort. Cycling training with ChatGPT explains why the FTP’s date matters as much as its number.
Gearing, altitude and fuelling
Gradients that average 9.3% and peak at 15% to 19% reward low gears. A compact chainset with a large rear sprocket lets you hold steady power on the Giau rather than grinding.
Several summits are above 2,200 m. At that height, riders who live near sea level may find hard efforts feel harder, and the descents are cold even in July. Carry a layer for the descents.
The organiser’s refreshment points are on the passes, including Gardena, Giau and Falzarego. Many endurance riders aim for somewhere around 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrate an hour once their gut is trained for it. Practise the amount, and keep the plan in the event’s notes in Athmex.
The ballot, the medical certificate and the deadlines
Pre-entry for the 2027 ballot runs until 10 November, costs €3 and isn’t refunded. The draw is in the second half of November, and drawn riders must pay by 10 December. About 8,000 riders are expected, and 4,000 places go to the draw.
| Route | How it works |
|---|---|
| Tour operators | Packages with entry and accommodation from the organiser’s official operators. |
| Charity | 200 places released on 25 November and 200 on 18 March 2027. |
| Women’s groups | Up to 200 places after the draw for undrawn women’s groups. |
| Non-European riders | 100 entries drawn among pre-registered riders from outside Europe. |
| Loyalty | Riders who have completed at least 15 editions skip the draw. |
Italian law requires a medical certificate for competitive cycling, dated within a year of the event and uploaded by 26 May 2027, plus a one-day licence. Without the certificate you get no number. Riders must be 18 or over, and 18-year-olds can ride only the 55 and 106 km routes. Numbers are collected in person in San Leonardo, Badia, from 30 June to 3 July, with ID. Athmex doesn’t sell or manage entries.

Maratona rider training example
Your FTP, recent rides and training availability make the difference between a generic plan and advice you can use.
The questionCan I reach Cernadoi before 11.50 from a late start group, or should I plan for the 106?
A useful answer starts from 230 W at 70 kg, estimates the time over the Sellaronda and Campolongo again at a sustainable power, allows for a slow first climb in traffic, and says honestly how big the margin is. It plans May and June around repeated climbing efforts in the hours the rider has.
Climbing training with ChatGPT or Claude covers the sustained efforts this build needs.

Questions to bring back during the build
A Maratona build runs from winter to early July. These are the moments to come back, with the question you might ask.
After the ballot
I got a place. Save the Maratona and build me a plan from now to July around eight hours a week.
Once the event is in Athmex, every plan counts back from 4 July. Why an AI plan ignores your schedule explains why it needs your real week.
After an FTP retest
I tested at 241 W today. Save it, then tell me what that changes for the Giau.
A dated FTP changes every target in the plan. Raising FTP with ChatGPT or Claude covers the testing.
When the knee complains
My knee was sore after Saturday’s climbs. Do I back off, and does the 106 make more sense?
Saved injuries keep that conversation honest. Pain that changes how you ride needs a physio, not a plan.
In race week
The Maratona is on Sunday. Plan my last five days, my feeding and my power over the Sellaronda.
Race week is about arriving fresh, with the number collected and the day’s plan settled. What to tell ChatGPT or Claude before the day lists what the conversation needs.

Where AI help stops
ChatGPT or Claude can misjudge a goal, plan more climbing than your body can absorb or rescale a whole block from a stale FTP, so read its plan critically and check it against how you feel.
Descending, bunch riding and mountain weather are skills and judgements no chat can practise for you. Pain, illness, fainting or anything medical needs a doctor. No AI can examine you.
Maratona dles Dolomites questions
