Can ChatGPT or Claude help you train for the New York City Marathon?
Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can help you plan a New York build, prepare for a course with more climbing than a flat city race, and work out race morning around an early journey to the start. It needs your race day, recent times and the week you have.
Athmex keeps those in one athlete profile that ChatGPT or Claude can use in every conversation. The assistant gives the advice; Athmex keeps the context current.

Your recent runs belong in the conversation too
A build that runs through late summer and autumn rarely matches the plan week for week. The gap is where the useful questions are.
When your recent runs reach ChatGPT or Claude through your training platform’s own connection, your coach can check how the long runs are building and whether last week went as planned. Routes differ by platform and by assistant.
Athmex doesn’t import activity. It keeps the context those runs are read against: your race day, goal, recent times and training week. Start your free trial and Athmex will show you the best available way to bring your runs into ChatGPT or Claude for your setup.

In ChatGPT or Claude
One coaching conversation that can use both when you ask about your New York build.
Five boroughs, several bridges
New York’s route starts by crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and later crosses others, including the Queensboro, on its way through the five boroughs. Bridges mean climbs and descents a flat-city plan doesn’t prepare you for.
Tell ChatGPT or Claude where you can find hills near home and how often you can get to them. It can then build regular climbing into the plan and help you pace the bridges steadily. Keep the course notes in your race in Athmex so every later answer allows for them.
An early journey to a Staten Island start
The race starts on Staten Island, and getting there takes planning. Breakfast, layers and timing on race morning all depend on your wave and how you travel. Once your entry gives you a start time, add it to your race notes and ask the assistant to plan race morning backwards from it.
What to bring to your New York training conversation
The facts that turn a generic marathon plan into a New York plan. Save them once in Athmex rather than retyping them.
- Race day
- The date and start time on your entry.
- Goal
- Finish and enjoy it, a round-number time or a specific target.
- Recent races
- Half-marathon, 10K or previous marathon times, each with its date.
- Current running
- How many days a week you run now and how long you’ve been consistent.
- Hills
- Where you can practise climbs and descents near home.
- Travel
- When you arrive in New York and how far you’re travelling.
- Constraints
- Injuries and niggles, shift patterns, family and anything else the build has to fit around.
One New York runner, one useful question
An illustrative runner, not a real athlete or customer. This is the profile ChatGPT or Claude could work from before the runner types a word.
The questionI work two weekends a month. How do I fit my long runs in, and how much hill work do I need for the bridges?
A useful answer moves the long run to Wednesday on working weekends, adds hill running to one other day, and builds from the September half.
Why an AI plan ignores your schedule explains why the working weekends need to be in its context.

Questions to bring back during the build
A New York build runs from late summer into autumn. These are the moments to come back, with the question you might ask.
When your shifts change
My rota’s changed and I’m now working every other weekend. Rework my next four weeks.
A lasting change belongs in your profile. Update your training days in Athmex so later conversations plan around the week you really have.
After an autumn half
I ran 2:04:50 at a half on Sunday. Update my PB, then tell me what it means for New York.
An autumn half marathon is the best evidence of current fitness you’ll get. Save it with its date. What to update after a race covers the rest.
When the goal needs to change
A cold has cost me ten days. Should I still aim for 4:30, or just get round?
Getting round New York is a goal in its own right. Once you’ve decided, update the goal in Athmex so later answers are aimed at the race you’re now running.
In race week
I fly in on Thursday and my wave starts mid-morning on Sunday. Plan my last days and race-morning meals.
Race week is about arriving fresh, with travel, sleep, meals and your start plan settled. What to tell ChatGPT or Claude before race day lists what the conversation needs.

Where AI help stops
A marathon build is long enough for small misunderstandings to add up. ChatGPT or Claude can misjudge a goal, pacing you off the target rather than your fitness, or suggest more than your body can take, so read its plan critically and check it against how you feel.
Pain that changes how you run, illness, fainting or anything medical needs a doctor or physio. No AI can examine you.
New York City Marathon questions
Can ChatGPT make a New York City Marathon training plan?
Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can draft and adapt a New York plan. It’s more useful when it knows your race day, goal, recent race times with dates, current running, where you can find hills and your constraints. Athmex keeps those ready.
Is the New York City Marathon hilly?
It has more climbing than a flat city course, mostly from its bridges, including the Verrazzano-Narrows at the start and the Queensboro later on. Regular hill running in the build helps.
Where does the New York City Marathon start and finish?
It starts on Staten Island and runs through Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx to finish in Central Park. Your entry confirms your wave and start details.
What should Claude know about my New York race morning?
Your start time and wave, how you’re getting to Staten Island, what you usually eat before a long run and how long before it. With those, it can plan race morning backwards from your start.
What does Athmex add to ChatGPT or Claude?
