Train for a half marathon with ChatGPT or Claude.

A plausible-looking half-marathon schedule isn’t automatically a suitable one. Athmex keeps your recent times, race, running days and constraints ready for ChatGPT or Claude, so the build fits the runner doing it.

Can ChatGPT build a half-marathon training plan?

Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can organise a half-marathon build, explain the training choices and adapt the plan as circumstances change. But a plausible-looking schedule isn’t automatically a suitable one.

A runner targeting a first finish, a runner moving up from 10K and an experienced athlete chasing a PB need different long-run progression, intensity and recovery. Athmex gives the assistant the athlete context behind those differences, so it can reason about them instead of rebuilding your profile from scratch each time.

What information improves an AI half-marathon plan

The half is long enough that endurance matters and short enough that pace does too. The assistant needs both sides of the picture.

Recent races
5K, 10K or half-marathon times, with their dates.
Threshold
Threshold pace or heart rate if known. A recent race time works if not.
Goal
A first finish, a round-number target such as sub-2 or a specific PB.
Race
The event, its date and anything notable about the course, such as hills or a late-morning start.
Running days
How many days you can run and when the long run can happen.
Constraints
Injuries, other sports, work and family commitments.

Same race. Different build.

Both runners have entered the same half marathon. Their plans should share very little.

Runner A

Longest run

Days

Goal
First half, finish strong

For this runner, twelve weeks leaves room to build the long run gradually from 10 km, keep most running easy and practise fuelling before race day rather than on it.

Runner B

Half PB

Threshold pace
4:18/km
Days

Constraint
Plays five-a-side on Thursdays

The endurance base exists. The block can include threshold and race-pace work pitched from 4:18/km, placed so Thursday football doesn’t land on the day before a key session.

One race date, two very different twelve weeks. The runners are illustrative, and the outlines aren’t prescriptions.

First half marathon versus a PB attempt

A first half marathon is about arriving at the start line able to cover 21.1 km in reasonable comfort. A PB attempt asks for that and more: sustained work at or near race pace, and the recovery to absorb it.

Tell the assistant which one you’re aiming for. The same runner might want a comfortable first half this spring and a time target next year, and those are separate goals.

What your 5K, 10K and half-marathon times tell the assistant

Shorter race times show speed. A previous half-marathon time shows what you managed over the distance on one day. Put together, they help ChatGPT or Claude judge whether a goal is realistic and where your pace targets should sit.

Race-time equivalence isn’t exact. A runner with a quick 5K and little endurance won’t necessarily run the half their 5K predicts. That gap is useful information, and a good plan works on it.

Building endurance without treating the long run as the whole plan

The long run matters, but so does the rest of the week. Endurance for a half marathon also comes from consistent easy running across several days, and a single long run can’t make up for a thin week around it.

How long the long run should become depends on your background, your goal and how you recover. Some runners build beyond the race distance; many don’t. Your AI should decide that from your history, not from a universal number.

Available training days and real-life scheduling

Half-marathon training asks for more time than 5K or 10K, and that time has to fit around a life. Three days can work for a first finish. More days give room for easier volume around the harder sessions.

Keep your real running days in Athmex. If weekends are busy and your long run has to happen on a Wednesday evening, ChatGPT or Claude needs to know before it plans the week.

Pace and threshold context

For many runners, half-marathon pace sits a little slower than threshold pace, which is why threshold pace or heart rate is useful to the assistant. It helps it set sessions that build race-specific fitness without tipping into efforts you can’t recover from.

If you only know a recent race time, that’s enough to start. Update your threshold in Athmex when you learn a better number.

Strength work, cross-training and other sports

Many half-marathon runners also lift, cycle, swim or play team sports. Those sessions affect fatigue and recovery, and the assistant can’t allow for them if it doesn’t know about them.

Record other regular commitments as constraints. A Tuesday gym session or Saturday football changes where a hard run should go.

Fuelling practice as race duration increases

Depending on your pace, a half marathon can take anywhere from well under 90 minutes to three hours or more. The longer you’re out there, the more it’s worth practising what you’ll eat and drink before and during the race on your long runs.

ChatGPT or Claude can help plan that practice. If you have a sensitive stomach or dietary needs, add them to your profile notes so suggestions take them into account.

Adjusting when a long run or a key week is missed

Missing one long run rarely ruins a half-marathon build. Trying to make it up by running further the next weekend is where problems start. Illness, travel and work all interrupt training, and the useful question is what to do with the weeks left.

Ask “I missed last week’s long run and the race is in five weeks, what now?” and an assistant that knows your goal, race date and recent running can give an answer for your build.

Race date and taper context

The last week or two before a half usually reduce volume while keeping some sharpness. How much to cut depends on how hard the build was and how you respond to rest.

Store the race and its date in Athmex, and the assistant can count back from it without you restating it. If the half goes well and you’re thinking bigger, the marathon page covers what changes at 42.2 km.

Bringing recent runs into the conversation

Over a twelve-week build, what you actually ran matters as much as what the plan said.

When recent activity reaches ChatGPT or Claude through your training platform’s own route, the assistant can see whether long runs are progressing and whether easy days are staying easy. Routes vary by platform and assistant.

Athmex doesn’t import or store activity. It supplies the context around those runs. See what your platform supports.

Where AI half-marathon coaching has limits

ChatGPT and Claude can misunderstand a note, work from outdated information or suggest a jump in volume that doesn’t suit you. Check a plan against how your body is responding, not only against the calendar.

Pain that changes your running, unusual fatigue or anything that could be medical needs a physio, doctor or other qualified professional. Don’t push through it because a plan says so.

Questions runners ask

Can ChatGPT create a half-marathon plan?

Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can build a half-marathon plan and adapt it as training goes. It needs your recent times, goal, race date, running days and constraints to make the plan suitable, which Athmex keeps ready.

Can AI adapt a half-marathon plan after a missed long run?

Yes. Tell it which run you missed, why, and how long is left before the race. It can rework the remaining weeks rather than simply adding the missed distance to the next one.

What information improves an AI half-marathon plan?

Recent race times with dates, threshold pace if known, your goal, the race and date, how many days you can run, and other sports or constraints.

Give ChatGPT or Claude the half-marathon context it’s normally missing.
