Can ChatGPT or Claude help you train for the Boston Marathon?
Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can help you plan a Boston build, prepare for the course’s downhill miles and late hills, and decide how to pace a race that rewards patience early. It needs to know your current fitness, not just the time that got you in.
Athmex keeps your race, qualifying time, recent results and training week in one athlete profile that ChatGPT or Claude can use in every conversation. The assistant gives the advice; Athmex keeps the context current.

Your recent runs belong in the conversation too
Through a winter build for an April race, the useful questions come from the gap between the plan and the running you actually did.
When your recent runs reach ChatGPT or Claude through your training platform’s own connection, your coach can check how the long runs are building and whether last week went as planned. Routes differ by platform and by assistant.
Athmex doesn’t import activity. It keeps the context those runs are read against: your race day, goal, recent times and training week. Start your free trial and Athmex will show you the best available way to bring your runs into ChatGPT or Claude for your setup.

From your training platform

In ChatGPT or Claude
One coaching conversation that can use both when you ask about your Boston build.
Downhill early, hills late
Boston runs from Hopkinton to Boylston Street, losing height in the early miles. The Newton hills come between roughly miles 17.5 and 21, ending with Heartbreak Hill, at the point in a marathon when legs are already tired.
That shape raises two questions for the build: how much downhill and uphill running to include, and how to pace the first half so the hills aren’t run on spent legs. If your local roads are flat, tell ChatGPT or Claude, and say where the nearest hills are. Keep the course notes in your race in Athmex so every later answer allows for them.

A qualifying time is an application, not a place
Running your age-group standard lets you apply. When more qualifiers apply than there are places, those furthest under their standard are accepted first. For 2027, that meant being 5 minutes 17 seconds or more under.
If you’re chasing a qualifier for a future year, give the assistant your standard and the margin you want, and plan the qualifying race around that margin rather than the bare standard. Can ChatGPT predict your marathon time? explains how far one race result can be stretched towards another.
A Monday race moves your week
Boston is run on a Monday, so the weekend before becomes travel and rest. The last long run, the taper and the meals before the race all shift by a day compared with a Sunday marathon. Tell the assistant your travel days and it can count back from the Monday correctly.
What to bring to your Boston training conversation
The facts that turn a generic marathon plan into a Boston plan. Save them once in Athmex rather than retyping them.
- Race day
- Monday 19 April 2027.
- Qualifier
- The race you qualified in, its date and your time. It describes your fitness then, not now.
- Goal
- Enjoy the day, a time target, or a qualifier for a future year.
- Recent races
- Half-marathon, 10K or marathon times since you qualified, each with its date.
- Current running
- How many days a week you run now, and your longest recent runs.
- Terrain
- Whether your local roads include hills, and any long downhills you can reach.
- Constraints
- Injuries and niggles, travel, work and anything else the build has to fit around.
One Boston runner, one useful question
An illustrative runner, not a real athlete or customer. This is the profile ChatGPT or Claude could work from before the runner types a word.
The questionMy roads are flat. How do I get ready for Boston’s downhill start and the Newton hills?
A useful answer starts from the qualifier and the runs since, not the course’s reputation. It puts the one hilly route to regular use for both climbing and descending, and plans a first half steady enough that the hills arrive on legs that still have something left.
Why an AI plan can pace you off your goal explains why the qualifier alone isn’t enough to set paces.

Questions to bring back during the build
A Boston build runs through winter for most entrants. These are the moments to come back, with the question you might ask.
When winter takes a week
It’s snowed for a week and I’ve missed two long runs. What now?
Missed sessions in winter are part of an April build. Ask for a rework of the next few weeks. Why an AI plan ignores your schedule explains what goes wrong when it doesn’t know what changed.
After a tune-up race
I ran 1:37:10 at a half in March. Update my half-marathon PB, then tell me what it means for Boston.
A spring half marathon shows your fitness now, which matters more than the qualifier from last year. Save it with its date. What to update after a race covers the rest.
When the goal needs to change
My hamstring has cost me three weeks. Should I race Boston or just enjoy it?
Give the assistant an honest picture of the weeks you’ve lost before deciding. Once you have, update the goal in Athmex so later answers follow the race you’re now running.
In race week
I fly to Boston on Friday and race on Monday. Plan the weekend and my last runs.
Race week is about arriving fresh, with travel, sleep, meals and a pacing plan for the downhill start settled. What to tell ChatGPT or Claude before race day lists what the conversation needs.

Getting your Boston context ready
- 01
Build your athlete profile
Add Boston, its date and your goal, your qualifier and recent times, training days and the hills you can reach. Leave what you don’t know blank.
- 02
Connect ChatGPT or Claude

- 03
Bring your recent runs in too
We’ll show you how to bring available activity data from Garmin, COROS, Strava and other platforms into ChatGPT or Claude.
Where AI help stops
A marathon build is long enough for small misunderstandings to add up. ChatGPT or Claude can misjudge a goal, pacing you off the target rather than your fitness, or suggest more than your body can take, so read its plan critically and check it against how you feel.
Pain that changes how you run, illness, fainting or anything medical needs a doctor or physio. No AI can examine you.
Boston Marathon questions
Can ChatGPT make a Boston Marathon training plan?
Yes. ChatGPT or Claude can draft and adapt a Boston plan. It’s more useful when it knows your race day, goal, qualifier and recent race times with dates, current running, the terrain you train on and your constraints. Athmex keeps those ready.
Does a qualifying time get me into the Boston Marathon?
Not on its own. A qualifying time lets you apply. When more qualifiers apply than there are places, those furthest under their standard are accepted. For 2027, accepted qualifiers were 5 minutes 17 seconds or more under their age-group standard.
Can ChatGPT help me prepare for the Newton hills?
Yes. Tell it where you can find hills and long descents near home, and how your week works. It can then plan regular uphill and downhill running and a first-half pace that leaves something for miles 17.5 to 21.
When is the 2027 Boston Marathon?
Monday 19 April 2027. The course runs point to point from Hopkinton to Boylston Street in Boston. Your entry confirms your own start details.
